Pattern surface design
Even though I learned Illustrator when I was in undergrad at Drexel (circa 2000), most of it had escaped my brain. Luckily for me I have been using PhotoShop ever since 2000, and I am very familiar with the way Adobe products work. I also learned InDesign last semester while laying out Penny Olive.
Illustrator and I were off to a rough start in the beginning of the semester, but thanks for laying out my typeface for unconventional typography in Illustrator and having Profes

Package tweaking//pattern design
This week Bosler encouraged me to create a pattern for the Penny Olive package. Since I want it to have fabric texture, I designed it in PhotoShop. I was trying to a similar look to the textile that I was using (the mustard yellow with small flowers and circles), but it wasn't working with my flowers. I decided to go with a vintage fabric from a 40's feed bag. I feel like the blue pattern with the reds and yellows is working better than the yellow. In addition, I tweaked the

Package redesign / typography choices
I really appreciated the feedback from our critique on Friday. Some problem areas with the package design from last week that I focused on this week were: Blackletter font and Skratch font being difficult to read Too filled and busy Copyright issues with fabric used in design Copy wording needing some revisions I spent about 6 hours scoring and researching a serif that is playful yet readable. As I stated before, I am looking towards the Ladybug Girl book and doll set as insp

Penny Olive Story Board
While writing the story for Penny Olive, I am realizing quickly that I have two stories happening simultaneously! I have the introduction story about basic fact that shape the character, and I have a story about a trip she goes on with her great-grandmother. In order to keep the first and introduction book short and sweet, I have decided to rewrite and split the two stories. Since I am writing for ages 6-8, I don't want to overwhelm the reader with too much information. I
©.....
I looked into © copyrighting the character since I had some issues with my work being used in a publication recently without my consent or knowledge and without giving me credit. It's really too expensive for me at the moment. But I am researching "Poor man's copyright": A widely circulated strategy to avoid the cost of copyright registration is referred to as the "poor man's copyright". It proposes that the creator send the work to himself in a sealed envelope by registere

Continuing to piece together Penny Olive's journey

Penny Olive is really coming alive!
I have been working all week on the design and composition of my beloved charater, Penny Olive. Here she is so far. Not sure which apron textile I will go with. I am hoping to scan an old fabric from my great-Granny Fisher for Penny Olive to wear. #PennyOlive #PersonalExplorations
